Meaning
Indicates that after a long process or struggle, a final result (often negative or disappointing) was reached. It implies a sense of exhaustion or frustration.
Note
Almost always used for situations that result in an undesirable outcome. Often used with words like 'sanzan' (thoroughly) or 'kekkyoku' (in the end) to emphasize the struggle.

さんざん悩んだあげく、彼と別れることにしました。
After agonizing over it for a long time, I decided to break up with him.
色々と考えたあげく、結局何も買わなかった。
After thinking about various things, I ended up not buying anything.
長い時間待たされたあげく、結局会えなかった。
After being kept waiting for a long time, I ended up not being able to see them.
