Meaning
Indicates a strong, official prohibition.
Note
A formal and archaic expression used to state that an action strictly must not or should not be done. In modern Japanese, it is primarily found in written signs, warnings, and moral maxims or proverbs rather than daily conversation.
Examples
「立入禁止:関係者以外ここに入るべからず」
"No Trespassing: Unauthorized persons must not enter here."
どれほど成功しても、初心を忘れるべからず。
No matter how successful you become, you must not forget your original intention.
人として、いかなる理由があろうとも悪事をすべからず。
As a human being, no matter the reason, you must not do evil.
自分の利益のために、他人を騙すべからず。
You must not deceive others for your own gain.
いかなる正義を掲げようとも、決して人の命を奪うべからず。
No matter what justice you claim, you must never take a human life.
