Meaning
Used to express that while the current situation is far from ideal, it is still better than other worse possibilities.
Note
Conveys a sense of relative satisfaction or resignation. It implies that considering the circumstances, the result is the 'lesser of two evils' and one should be thankful for that small mercy. Often used in contrast (A is bad, but B is 'mashi').
Examples
給料は安いが、もらえるだけましだ。
The salary is low, but I should be grateful that I get one at least.
不合格だったのは残念だが、最後まで頑張れただけましだ。
It's a pity I failed, but at least I was able to do my best until the end.
このアパートは狭いが、家賃が安いだけましだ。
This apartment is small, but at least the rent is cheap.
昨日はひどい暑さだったが、今日はまだ涼しいだけましだ。
It was terribly hot yesterday, but at least it's still cool today.
この場所は不便だが、静かなだけましだ。
This place is inconvenient, but at least it's quiet.
