Meaning
Indicates doing something while also taking the opportunity to do something else.
Note
A formal expression indicating that while doing one action, another action is done as well, taking advantage of the opportunity. It is often used with verbs of movement like 'going', 'walking', or 'driving'. It is more formal than 'tsuide ni'.

散歩がてら、本屋に寄った。
I stopped by the bookstore while taking a walk.
夕涼みがてら、近所の公園を歩いた。
I walked in the neighborhood park while enjoying the evening cool.
ドライブがてら、少し遠くのスーパーまで買い物に行った。
I went shopping at a supermarket a bit further away while going for a drive.
遊びがてら、一度私の家にも来てください。
Please come visit my house sometime while you're out having fun.
お花見がてら、近くの神社まで散歩しましょう。
