Meaning

Used to indicate that while something may not reach a certain high level or extreme extent, it still meet a certain minimum standard or condition.

Note

Indicates that while an ideal situation (A) is not expected or achieved, a second-best or at-least-acceptable situation (B) is maintained or desired. Expressions like 'at least' (せめて) or 'at the very least' (少なくとも) are frequently found in the second clause. It is a formal, literary expression.

Examples

100点は取れないまでも、せめて合格点は取りたい。

Although I might not get 100 points, I want to at least get a passing grade.

毎日とは言わないまでも、週に一度は掃除してほしい。
