Meaning
Used to explain that an action was done simply for a certain reason, with no other special intent. It often implies that the action was a matter of course or the only natural thing to do.
Note
A formal expression. Often used to modestly downplay one's own actions (e.g., 'I just did what I had to do').
Examples
私は自分の義務を果たしたまでだ。
I just fulfilled my duty.
お礼には及びません。当然のことをしたまでだ。
No need for thanks. I only did what was natural.
ただ事実を伝えたまでのことだ。他意はない。
I simply conveyed the facts. There is no other intention.
彼はただ自分の意見を述べたまでのことだ。
He simply stated his own opinion.
困っている人を助けるのは当たり前です。私はそうしたまでだ。
It's natural to help someone in trouble. I just did that.
別に怒っているわけではない。ただ驚いたまでのことだ。
I'm not particularly angry. I was just surprised.
