〜とは

Meaning
Used to define or explain the meaning of a word or concept. It is often followed by a definition or a question about the definition. 'って' is the casual version.
Note
A formal way to define or explain a term (とは). 'って' is a more casual/spoken version. 'というのは' is very common for providing more detailed explanations or definitions.
Examples
「ひらがな」とは、日本の文字のことだ。
"Hiragana" are Japanese characters.
デジカメとは、デジタルカメラを短くした言葉だ。
"Dejikame" is a shortened word for digital camera.
ネットショッピングとは、インターネットで買い物をすることです。
