A very common grammatical particle attached to the imperfective form meaning 'without doing' (equivalent to ～ないで / ～ずに). Used when one action occurs without another being done first.
朝ごはんを食べずに学校へ行った。
I went to school without eating breakfast.
彼は謝らずにその場を立ち去った。
He left the place without apologizing.
薬を飲まずに放置すると症状が悪化することがある。
If you leave it without taking medicine, the symptoms may worsen.
忘れ物をせずに済んでよかった。
I'm glad I managed not to forget anything.
