Rendaku: a phonological phenomenon in Japanese where an initial unvoiced consonant of the non-initial element in a compound becomes voiced (e.g. hana + hi → hanabi). Used in linguistics and language study.
Rendaku can occur in Japanese compounds. For example: hana (flower) + hi (fire) → hanabi (fireworks).
'Yamakawa' is an example where rendaku does not occur; the rules vary depending on the word.
